Priority Spending Areas

The four proposed Priority Spending Areas include:

1) Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve management program (30%)

  • Operational costs of Reserve Management Service, incl. production and sale of Turtle, Manta ray and Whale Shark Tokens
  • Implementation of Hanifaru Management Plan (production and selling of Hanifaru Tokens; construction and operation of Hanifaru visitors centre; acquisition and operation of taxi boat service; implementation of ranger services; implementation of Hanifaru related awareness and information services; etc.)
  • Development and implementation of management plans for other MPAs
  • Development and implementation of management plans for conservation, buffer and other zones

2) Program for the protection, conservation and management of biological and natural resources, biodiversity and nature protection in Baa Atoll (30%)

  • Shark protection program
  • Sea birds protection program
  • Turtle protection program
  • Sea cucumber program
  • Spiny lobster protection program
  • Prevention/control of alien invasive species program
  • Grouper program
  • Reef fish protection program
  • Bait fish conservation program

3) Livelihood improvement program for Baa Atoll residents, focusing on projects that are in line with sustainability and atoll ecosystem conservation policies (30%)

  • Sustainable fishery program
  • Sustainable aquaculture program
  • Sustainable agriculture program
  • Green handicraft program
  • Sustainable tourism program
  • Green transport program
  • Green services program

4) Research, awareness raising and education program, focused on protection, conservation and management of biological and natural resources, biodiversity and nature protection in Baa Atoll (10%)

  • Support to Baa Atoll focused national and international research related to biodiversity, environment protection and livelihoods
  • Community engagement program related to biodiversity, environment protection and livelihoods issues
  • Education and awareness raising at Baa Atoll level related to biodiversity, environment protection and livelihoods
