Government declares 4 more protected areas in Baa Atoll

10 October 2023

Four more areas of Baa Atoll have been declared protected by the government. This decision follows the cabinet's recommendation and was made after a thorough cabinet deliberation on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology.

The four areas that will be granted protected status under the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act (Law No. 04/93) include Huraifaru Region, Dharavandhoo Thila, Nelivaru Region, and Innafushi Region.

Each area has been identified as having rich ecosystems that host various fauna and marine species and their preservation is deemed crucial for future generations of Maldivians and the total number of protected areas in Baa Atoll now sum up to fourteen.
